For a leader to succeed, they have to be able to hire the right people for their team. In fact nothing is more important. And while leaders are told to recruit the right people, they have never been taught how to recruit the right people. That is why most leaders spend 10% of their time recruiting, 90% of their time making up for recruiting mistakes.

The result of this is huge inefficiencies, unhappy people and results below what is possible for leaders to achieve, not to mention very expensive and disruptive processes for the organisation when the wrong people are hired.

Billionaire John Caldwell once said, β€œIf I’m lucky, I only get recruiting wrong 70% of the time”. But how is it that we accept being wrong so much of the time?

In this video, Mads Faurholt shares based on science and research, as well as having hired and managed thousands of people; frameworks, processes, and tools for how you can become a world-class recruiter today, and immediately start hiring the right people, that will enable you and your organisation to reach its potential.

Mads Faurholt is a successful serial entrepreneur, bestselling author and keynote speaker, having founded and run companies across various sectors including technology, financial services, marketing, HR, food and education, with thousands of employees, and done several exits at valuations of up to over hundreds of million USD. Mads is a former Management Consultant at McKinsey & Company, and received his bachelor from Copenhagen Business School and his MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

  1. Know what skills it takes to be a good cook? The ability to follow a recipe. What skills does it take to follow a recipe? First, one needs to read the entire recipe. Then you have to look over the ingredients, make sure you have them on hand and in the qty needed, make a list of what you don't have or need and go to the store and get it. You also have to make sure you have the equipment. Don't have a grater? A juicer? A masher? Go get one or figure out a way using what you do have. Then you need to organize everything. Wet ingredients, dry ingredients what bowl sizes to hold what until you're ready to combine get the pots or cooker out. Then you need to be able to measure. Then you need to follow instructions. There may be some element of timing involved. Marinate for a 8 hours or let soak for one hour, pre-heat the oven 15 minutes before placing roast to cook for one hour per lb. So to be a GOOD cook, it requires certain skills. Time management, organization, ability to follow an instructions. So asking someone if they're a good cook or do they have a favorite recipe book or box of recipes, their answer can tell you a lot .

  2. Staff recruitment is a critical process that requires integrity, fairness, and diligence. It is essential for recruitment offices to prioritize hiring individuals of virtue to ensure that the process is not tainted by ill will, biases, or prejudices. When the recruitment process is compromised, it can lead to dire consequences, such as allowing individuals with criminal intentions or questionable backgrounds to infiltrate workplaces. These individuals may use their positions to shield themselves, spread toxic behavior, and create an unfair and damaging work environment.

To prevent such scenarios, it is crucial to incorporate measures that enhance transparency and accountability. For instance, involving law enforcement or relevant authorities in the recruitment process can be beneficial. Requiring a police-issued certificate of character for all selected staff ensures that employers have a clear understanding of who they are hiring from the outset. This measure adds an extra layer of security and helps mitigate the risk of employing individuals with hidden criminal records or connections to rogue actors.

Moreover, it is vital to safeguard the recruitment process from external interference. Rogue actors may attempt to exploit state tools or manipulate legal systems to obscure their crimes and secure positions within organizations. Recruitment teams must remain vigilant and uphold principles of justice and fairness throughout the hiring process. Ensuring that decisions are based on both character and performance is key to building a strong and trustworthy workforce.

Ultimately, recruitment is not just about filling vacancies; it is about building a foundation of ethical and competent individuals who contribute positively to the organization's mission and culture. By hiring and maintaining the right people, organizations can foster a productive, safe, and equitable work environment while avoiding the pitfalls of toxic influences.

  3. Talked nothing about how to master recruiting . Talked a lot about the importance of being a good recruiter, how looking for someone like yourself is the wrong approach. Selecting the right candidate that is skilled in a specific task. Not a lot of substance on this video

  4. 🎯 Key points for quick navigation:

00:24 🎀 The ability to recruit the right people is argued to be the most crucial skill for any leader or CEO, yet it's often overlooked in traditional education and training.

01:59 🎻 Effective leadership simplifies to two core tasks: assembling the best team possible and enabling them to achieve success in their roles.

03:46 πŸ“‰ Poor hiring decisions not only impact productivity and profits but also severely affect company culture and employee satisfaction.

06:09 πŸ”„ Recognizing biases in hiring, such as hiring versions of ourselves or seeking candidates who can do everything, is critical to improving recruitment processes.

09:20 πŸ“Š Implementing structured recruitment frameworks, including algorithms to predict candidate success, can significantly enhance hiring accuracy and fairness.

10:58 πŸ’Ž Tools that look beyond resumes and assess 'whispering talents'β€”candidates whose potential may not be immediately apparentβ€”can uncover exceptional hires.

13:14 🎯 Successful recruitment hinges on three key questions: Can they do the job? Will they fit the culture? Do they align with the candidate's career goals and life?
