🇺🇸 United States Military Linguists are known for being among the fastest language learners in the world. But speed is certainly not the only goal. From gathering critical intelligence to supporting troops on the frontlines, a lot rests on the language skills of linguists in the U.S. Armed Forces.

So how do linguists in the U.S. Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy learn the language skills they need to do their jobs? That is precisely what I wanted to find out, so I reached out to two graduates of the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey, California: Elle and Jack.

This video details the incredibly intense programmes these service members complete, including interesting techniques like “iso-immersion” and “scream & scribble”. While only a select few can attend DLI, there are some powerful principles in this video that ALL language learners can apply. Hooah!

  1. With all my respect – me, originally Russian, seeing these american guys speaking Russian and understanding them… quite hardly. How it could be possible to match their level to 3 years studying language in college, while I know one catalan girl who learned speaking Russian way muuuuch better in… 3 years in college!

  2. Hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life but well worth it. You don’t fully appreciate it until it’s all over. They do an amazing job, from the civilian teachers to the military instructors (MLI’s).

  3. Learning a new language is a lot like mastering a fighting discipline then getting in a street fight (if you haven’t been in one, only ever fought those in your discipline) and your discipline holds you back your meant to be like water, formless

  4. When I joined the Navy, they had me take the test. Halfway through the test, I realized that it wasn’t something I wanted to do because it required the type of thought I wasn’t interested in. So I purposely failed it from the end and I did so well in the first part that I almost passed it 😂. I ended up with a way cooler job, so it was worth it.

  5. It’d be impressive if someone can be fluent in a language within one year when not living in the country speaking it or with a native speaker, especially when it’s the language that isn’t close to their mother tongue (different language branch).

I started to learn English when I was about 10, then German in my 20s. It was much quicker and I didn’t feel it too hard.

Recently I learn Mandarin Chinese (I’m in the 30s now), it’s like a punishment for me with all those characters, but still OK, just when I approach the Chinese language testing system as I want to get a language certificate and assess how I’m doing, I feel very annoyed and discouraged. So the Chinese (Mainland gov.) has the language certification classifies into HSK from 1-6, which was crazy, and seriously lacks logic in assessment method 😂. It is clearer when you climb to its advanced level.

So I realise it more clearly how a language is linked with our mindset, logical thinking and also culture. It’s hard to express it all here, as it takes time and research to feel it. So pick the languages you learn carefully 😂

  6. On simulation, she's speaking Farsi, cute! Love it!
Wish these skills were being used for promoting peace missions, and not for forever wars 😢

  7. One of my in-laws who was French knew perfect German before WWII. He was in a concentration camp and because he knew how to speak to the German guards he was able to stop them multiple times from shooting people by connecting emotionally with them. For years after the war he would have people turn up at his door just to thank him for saving their lives.

  8. I’d like to imagine a Russian military language school where the immersion for English is at an American high school football game. Your son’s team is down by seven in the fourth quarter — it’s 2 minutes til the buzzer. Everyone role is played by some heavy Russian guy.
